Proceduresĭownload and install the free VHD Attach utility, if you wish to use it (recommended). With this utility you can simply right-click a VHD file to attach (mount) or detach (unmount) it as a drive letter. It isn't absolutely required, but it makes working with VHD drives much more convenient. You will likely want to install the free VHD Attach utility. (Home and Professional editions of Windows 7 cannot be used to create BitLocker To Go drives, but they can use such drives after they are created on another system.) To create a BitLocker VHD drive, you must have Windows 7 Enterprise or Ultimate, Windows Server 2008-R2, or later operating systems.

The following will show you how to do it. You can conveniently mount/unmount VHD drives from within Windows Explorer or from the command line.
#DATARAM RAMDISK KEY RECOVERY PORTABLE#
If you copy the VHD file to a portable drive, the portable drive can stay in plaintext while the contents of the VHD file will be BitLocker-encrypted, which is nice when you need some regular plaintext portable storage too. When a VHD file using BitLocker is backed up or copied to a plaintext USB drive, the VHD file stays encrypted, which is not not true of the files on a volume using whole drive encryption. This allows multiple users to share a computer and use BitLocker to keep their files secret from each other. If you find it's disabled, enable it.You can mount a VHD image file as a drive letter and then encrypt the contents of that VHD with BitLocker. The location varies, but it's often in chipset settings. Windows Vista and 7 natively support the AHCI SATA controller standard, which enables faster data throughput, but it's worth checking that your motherboard does too.Įnter the BIOS by restarting your PC and hitting as it starts up, or watching for the key combination displayed for you to enter the CMOS utility. You should be able to get this from the support section of the manufacturer's site, along with instructions on how to apply it.

There may well be a firmware upgrade available for your drive that enables TRIM, so this is worth investigating too. It's a good idea to check through your drive's documentation or go to the manufacturer's website to see whether or not it's supported. Not all solid state drives support TRIM, although you'll find that an increasing number do. If the result is 1, then you'll need to enable TRIM by entering the following command:įsutil behavior query|set DisableDeleteNotify = 0 If TRIM is working correctly, you'll get a response of 0 (zero). Now enter the following command:įsutil behavior query DisableDeleteNotify To do this, go to 'Start | All programs | Accessories' right-click 'Command prompt' and choose 'Run as administrator'. You can check the status of TRIM by launching the command prompt using administrator privileges. Windows 7 supports TRIM, but it may not be enabled in your system. This helps to keep the disk in optimum condition, and therefore maintain its performance. The TRIM command lets operating systems inform SSDs which data blocks are no longer needed so they can be wiped internally. You can now double-click this value and enter the new location for your browser cache. If you use Firefox, enter about:config in the address bar and search for '_director'. Browse to your RAM drive for the new folder. To do this, go to 'Control Panel | Internet options', then select the 'General' tab and choose 'Move folder'.

You should consider moving your internet cache to the RAM drive too. Just bear in mind that all its contents will be lost once the power is shut down. In fact, even if you don't have an SSD but have enough RAM available to set up a drive, this is still a great way to improve system performance, because RAM is always faster than a physical drive. Now that you've set up a RAM disk, you can move Windows caches to it, thereby reducing the strain on your SSD and prolonging its life. The free version lets you set up drives up to 4GB in size. Enter the disk size, bearing in mind how much memory you have available, and click 'Start RAMDisk'. Once the program is launched, you need to open the 'Settings' tab and select the filesystem you want to use for the drive.
